                              Rahul’s faux pas
— Rahul Gandhi, the energetic and young MP has set the Ganges on fire by his whirlwind tour of UP, organising road shows, addressing public meetings bringing life to the moribund UP Congress party and even making inroads to Mulayam’s stronghold which no other Congress leaders have ventured to do so far. However some of his public statements have not only caused embarrassment to the Congress Party and its leadership but also raised diplomatic row. He said that had a Nehru-Gandhi family member remained as the Prime Minister at that time Babri Masjid would not have been allowed to be demolished forgetting for the time being the fact that the then Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao was a very senior and well respected leader of the Congress party. His another off the cuff remark relates to the contribution of Nehru-Gandhi family for independence of the country. No doubt,Pandit Motilal Nehru and his son Jawahar Lal Nehru played a dominant role in the freedom movement but the freedom
struggle was led by Mahatma Gandhi and stalwarts like Abul Kalam Azad,Sardar Patel,Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and millions of unkown Satyagrahis gave their full support. Their contribution cannot be ignored. Most damaging of all the statements of Rahul Gandhi which led to caustic comments from Pakistan Foreign Office relates to Nehru-Gandhi family’s contribution in the division of Pakistan with the creation of Bangladesh. Any one with little knowledge of history would have known the circumstances which compelled the then Prime Minister to order army operation to liberate Bangladesh. Rahul’s comment led the Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson to comment that India had always been trying to destabilise Pakistan. Such foot in the mouth comment by Rahul Gandhi at a time when both countries are embarking on a peace process and confidence building measures is not only unwarranted but also shows immaturity of thinking.Like Rajiv Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi has also gathered round him
highly professional corporate executives guiding him in the UP campaign. These professionals may be expert in management, but their knowledge of history needs brushing up. Source Assam Tribune 21.04.07
