Expert warns against large scale water impoundingWater storage for domestic industrial and agricultural needs was amust but large scale impounding of water within a given geographicalarea can have a telling effect on the plate dynamics especially in thecoastal areas that are susceptible to earthquakes. Dr. M.N.Madhyastha who served on an elite panel on river interlinkingconstituted by the former Prime Minister of India A.B. Vajpayee. Is he now saying “Do not interlink-Dangerous”?Giving an oration lecture on the occasion of the World Water day atthe National Institute of Technology Karnataka Dr. Madhyastha opinedthat impounding of water on a large scale in a small area couldde-stabilise plate tectonics as well the stability of the dam site.If he can quantify-then he can go build remedial factors into Dam’s design Taking the example of the Koyna earthquake in 1967 Dr. Madhyasthastated that earthquake was a direct product of impact on the platetectonics due to large scale water impounding in the Koyna dam whichhas been time and again established with scientific facts.Explaining if the large scale water impounding could have any effecton the marine life Dr. Madhyastha said the elite panel he representedhad advised that 20 percent of the water should be allowed to flow inthe course of the river- 20% of incoming to reservoir- means on an hourly/daily/weekly/monthly/yearly basis? If yearly-100% is going out anyway .and this percentage should be higher for thoserivers merging with the sea . Some specific tasks like maintaining thesalinity at a healthy level as well as supply nutrients to the marineecosystem.

While media remains indulgent in jingoistic Will that even bother China reporting of diversionof rivers in India and China and the civil society remains fragmentedwith its inherent historical amnesia Where is Society’s feedback possible/effective in a one-man-one-vote—simple-majority-partybased Demokrasy of a 4th grade non-nation? and morality with regard todevelopments that are changing the natural course of rivers beyondrepairs, Government of India has coopted Bought-up?some environmental NGOs infurtherance of its designs. These designs include equating nationalsecurity with national security? and public interest with nationalinterest.?? > > These NGOs publicly shy away from supporting Interlinking of Riversin India or in China but they are within a Government Committees whoseterms of reference makes interlinking of rivers fait accompli. Even assuch ecologically disastrous projects Can you explain the disaster part are under execution and thereare only two ways of expressing one's ideological positions either byopposing them or by supporting them, there are those who prefer to befence sitters. Shades of Grey is LIFEThese entities must be identified because they are morelethal than the visible actors-You mean MP’s—Oh NO!. The civil society space has suffered massive corrosion due such creatures Thank India Constitution/Governance.

Channeling impoundment construction of aquaducts and inter basin connectivity should be achieved he added. Itwas more important to conserve and develop water sources by variousmethods including the arrest of the salt water intrusion in coastal areas.Dr. Madhyastha also warned against the danger of drilling bore wellsindiscriminately as they are an intrusion into the natural aquifersystem. http://mangalorean.com/news.php?newstype=local&newsid=42678--- In WaterWatch at yahoogroups.com, mediavigil at ... wrote:>> Diverting Rivers in India and China> > While media remains indulgent in jingoistic reporting of diversionof rivers in India and China and the civil society remains fragmentedwith its inherent historical amnesia and morality with regard todevelopments that are changing the natural course of rivers beyondrepairs, Government of India has coopted some environmental NGOs infurtherance of its designs.
